Across the Miles

Did you travel to an interesting place this summer?

Did you see a bird that you wouldn't see around Pittsburgh?

Where did you see it?

What was it doing?

What did it look like?

Did you sketch it?

Did you take a photo of it?

E-mail it to msa2sae@comcast.net and we will tell your story.

Karen Kadar sends this picture of an Elegant Trogan that she was lucky to see in Cave Creek Canyon, Arizona this summer. It only breeds in the US in Southwestern Arizona in sycamore canyons. There are about 50 pair that breed in the US. Its call is a dog-like bark.

Birds Around Your Block

Do you know the birds around your house or neighborhood?
Can you describe the bird?
Does it come every day?
Does it come alone or in a group?
Do you hear its song or call?

What is your favorite bird?

My favorite bird is the Indigo Bunting. I remember seeing one for the first time on my deck on a rainy dreary day. The color was so vivid and memorable. I never saw it again, but always look for another one to appear. We are lucky to have Indigo Buntings nesting in the area around our school at South Allegheny Elementary in Port Vue.
